On the contrary, addiction is a disease, and no one overcomes the disease without help. It’s not uncommon to feel like you’re running on a treadmill, getting nowhere, but feeling emotionally and physically exhausted. My past relapses were largely fueled by sobriety’s inability to solve my problems for me. Instead of reaching out for help, giving AA a shot, or opening up to friends and family, I tried to Google my way to emotional stability. If there is an alternative program to those that interest you, go for it.

Emotional sobriety can be described as closely linked to serenity. This is an inner peace that many people claim they find in sobriety. Once you do return to work, it’s important to create a budget and take steps to safeguard yourself as work stress can be a relapse trigger. For example, you may have developed a co-dependent relationship, or a family member, friend, or employer may have been enabling you without even knowing it.

Surround yourself with sober friends

Whatever recovery path you take (and there are MANY), the main thing is to acknowledge that you don’t have all the answers and could use some help. That step alone will lighten the emotional load significantly. The actual recovery process of sobriety starts to get better around the 3-6 month mark, but the psychological recovery can take even longer. Maybe we feel lonely or lost an important relationship. We’re stuck in a miserable job and have lost hope that anything can change. As with most problems, the solution is as difficult or as simple as we make it.

‘Girl next door’ advocates for recovery – Foster’s Daily Democrat

‘Girl next door’ advocates for recovery.

Posted: Tue, 28 Jan 2020 08:00:00 GMT [source]

It’s been over six years since I first started seriously questioning my relationship with alcohol and considered a life without it. That’s six hard, beautiful, glorious years during which I not only stopped drinking, but also finally moved on from all recreational drugs as well as a history https://ecosoberhouse.com/ of bulimia. Milestones in sobriety (e.g., 24 hours, a month, three months) are celebrated to recognize the incredible hard work that’s been accomplished through staying sober for a certain length of time. They can help motivate a person to remain sober to reach the next milestone.

Relationships with Family and Friends

Thankfully, there have only been a few times when someone at the table hasn’t pointed it out on my behalf and adjusted accordingly. However, when it has happened, I have to speak up to point out that I didn’t drink and I’m not subsidizing their drinking. If you’re like me, this can feel entirely terrifying. I have always hated the feeling that I’m putting people out or being difficult.

Push through and show up, even on days you don’t want to. A lot of people in recovery become fitness buffs, and it makes sense. We gotta find new avenues to channel our energy and work being sober sucks out our stuff. There are so many emotional benefits to volunteer work that you could use right now. Let’s also acknowledge that most of us who drink alcoholically are self-absorbed.

Far too many people think that asking for help is a sign of weakness because they cannot overcome their addiction on their own.
